Heritage and history of Irish linen

Irish Linen

Irish linen has a long and important history in Ireland, deeply rooted in craft, trade, and rural life. For centuries, flax was grown and processed across the country, supporting entire communities and shaping a textile tradition that became known worldwide for its exceptional quality. Irish linen earned a reputation for being one of the finest fabrics available, valued for its strength, purity, and beautiful finish.

Today, that heritage still runs through every metre of fabric. While techniques have evolved, the knowledge and skill behind Irish linen remain closely connected to its origins. It is a material shaped by time, patience, and generations of expertise, and that sense of continuity is something I feel strongly connected to in my work.

How it feels on the skin

Linen has a very particular feel that sets it apart from other natural fibres. It is fresh, breathable, and incredibly comfortable to wear. The fabric allows air to move easily through it, making it naturally temperature regulating, keeping you cool in warmer weather and comfortable when layered.

It also has excellent moisture absorbing qualities, gently drawing moisture away from the skin which helps it feel dry and comfortable throughout the day. With wear, linen softens beautifully without losing its strength, becoming more fluid and relaxed over time. There is a lightness to it, both in how it feels and how it moves, which makes it ideal for everyday wear.

Sustainability

Irish linen is one of the most environmentally conscious textiles available. The flax plant requires far less water to grow than cotton and can thrive without intensive irrigation. It is also a remarkably efficient crop, with every part of the plant used, meaning there is very little waste in its production.

As a fibre, linen is exceptionally strong and long lasting. It is designed to endure, softening and improving with age rather than breaking down quickly. This longevity is central to its sustainability, encouraging garments and pieces that stay in use for many years.

We source our linen locally in Ireland, which helps reduce transport emissions and supports the continued strength of Irish textile production. As a small brand, we also work in limited quantities to avoid overproduction and minimise waste. For us, sustainability is about making thoughtful choices at every stage, and linen aligns naturally with that approach.

Caring For Your Linen

All of our Irish linen pieces can be machine washed - just use a gentle cycle at no more than 30°C. Linen responds well to ironing and can be pressed at a high temperature to keep it looking crisp and fresh.

The mills we work with

We have worked with Irish linen mills since the beginning of the business in 2011, building relationships that now span over 15 years. Over that time, those relationships have grown into genuine friendships with the weavers and mill teams we work alongside in Ireland.

As a small country, Ireland has a remarkably strong tradition of weaving and textile making, particularly when it comes to producing high-quality linen. That strength lies in the skill, care, and knowledge held within these mills, where expertise has been refined and passed down through generations.

Working closely with these makers allows us to stay connected to the fabric at every stage, from yarn to finished cloth, and ensures that the quality of Irish linen we use remains exceptional in both craft and character.

Design Principles

Everyday Pieces, Made For Years Of Use

The focus is on timeless design rather than trends. These are pieces made to feel relevant year after year, becoming part of a lasting wardrobe or home rather than something seasonal or short-lived. Simplicity, proportion, and function guide the design process, allowing the materials to speak for themselves.

Resource Efficiency

Nothing Wasted, Everything Considered

We keep and use fabric cut-offs wherever possible, turning smaller pieces of linen into useful items rather than allowing them to go to waste. This approach naturally shapes some of our smaller products and limited pieces, helping us make the most of the materials already in our studio.

Made With Care

Quality Over Quantity

We value quality over quantity, choosing a slower, more intentional approach to making.

Timeless Design

Rather than following trends, we focus on creating pieces that remain relevant and wearable for years to come.

Versatility And Ease

Pieces are designed to be mixed, matched, and lived with easily.

Responsible Production

By working in small batches and avoiding overproduction, we respect both our materials and the people involved in making them.
